The area planned for the new ape house of the Wilhelma Zoo in Stuttgart lies in the western part of the zoo, directly adjacent to the “Rosensteinpark”. The area rises in elevation and possesses a valuable collection of old trees.
To preserve the park-like character of the area, the concept pays particular attention to the topography of the site. The arbour of old trees remains mostly intact.

Architecture
The ape house is to be understood as part of the existing topography. The caged enclosures do not appear at first, as the exterior grounds are a continued extension of the rooftops.
The building divides the area into one subsection for gorillas and one for Bonobos. It consists of two areas, which exaggerate the existing topography and face each other from across a lateral gully running through the site. Offset from one another, the areas each create entrances in the east and the west, connecting to the existing visitor walkways.
The placement of the building into the topography allows for spacious caged enclosures. A heterogeneous outdoor space is created for the large apes. The pathway movement in and around the ape house offers visitors a succession of different views of the interior and exterior areas.
