Seams in the
spatial
Patchwork

The open space in question is an in-between space, like a spatial seam between local neighborhoods in the southern part of Leinefelde. It connects Leinefelde’s historical city center with the surrounding landscape. Adjoining open spaces in residential courtyards assume predominantly private functions, and feature a variety of leitmotifs and atmospheres. With respect to this patchwork, it is important to articulate this spatial interface with a unified framework. In this way the area should be rendered as public open space - a park between neighborhoods to be recognized and experienced.

The spatial
framework

The spatial framework is composed of three elements: An elevated promenade with complementary rows of trees, Plateaus with complementary pathways and Intersections completing the final scenario.

The elongated promenade spans the “spatial seam” along the western edge. Accentuated by a row of trees, it connects Leinefelde’s historical city center with the surrounding landscape. It is slightly elevated in relation to the adjacent surfaces. The relation between promenade and surface area is well suited to the given topography of the area.

Opposite the promenade, the in-between spaces are bound by plateaus. The plateaus are designed as slightly elevated surfaces, and are subdivided with respect to the site-specific widths of the “spatial seam”. They are emphasized by a canopy of greatly branching trees with small crowns. As unique situations emerge from the urban fabric, the tree canopy is varied by light masts or pergolas.

The intersections incorporate the flow of pedestrian traffic from the neighborhoods and knit them into the “spatial seam”. Intersections and plateaus are woven together to form entrances into the open space. Promenades, plateaus and intersections give the “spatial seam” a certain posture and at the same time protect private residential areas from the public park. Subsequently, they align the elongated “spatial seam” into a heterogeneous sequence of separate and unique fields.

Fields

Fields of different surfaces and functions stretch out over the spatial framework. Offset by the gradated promenades and plateaus, they form a spatially distinct element unto themselves. The fields accommodate individual urban contexts and functions: hard surfaces for markets, festivals, or Boule games (bocce ball), playing fields for romping and running, and lawns for just reclining or contemplation. The spatial concept is variable within such fields and may be realized and upgraded in piecemeal sections over time.
Leitmotif
Details

The arrangement and materiality of the corresponding promenades, plateaus and hard-surface intersections are recurring leitmotifs. They adapt to the respective situation, belong however to a common design language, contributing to the overall continuity and tangibility of the space. The same kinds of trees are furthermore intended for the promenades and plateaus.
